What Your 5 or 6-Year-Old Will Learn

At age 5 and 6, children are ready for more structure, direction, and technical skill building while still needing a warm, encouraging atmosphere. Our Pre-Ballet program utilizes the certified Ready, Set, Dance curriculum framework to balance real ballet technique with the sheer joy of movement.

Pre-Ballet Foundations

Foundational ballet positions, posture, spatial awareness, and musicality.

Dancers learn classical ballet technique, including primary foot and arm positions, proper posture, pliés, tendus, and simple traveling steps across the room. Using the Ready, Set, Dance curriculum framework, students develop physical coordination, flexibility, and spatial awareness through clear, engaging instruction.

Classroom Etiquette & Movement Vocabulary

French dance terminology, listening skills, and group cooperation.

Dancers are introduced to official ballet vocabulary and proper studio etiquette in an age-appropriate way. Students learn how to take turns, follow multi-step directions, listen to musical cues, and work together with peers from across local school systems.

Helpful Details for New Families

Clear answers to common questions about our Preschool & Kindergarten (Age 5–6) Pre-Ballet program.

Does my child need prior dance experience to start Pre-Ballet?

Not at all. Pre-Ballet is built to welcome both brand-new beginners and children transitioning from toddler dance programs. Our teachers introduce all foundational steps step-by-step so every child feels confident and supported.

What is the Ready, Set, Dance curriculum?

It is an internationally recognized, certified early childhood dance curriculum designed specifically for preschoolers and kindergarteners. It breaks down technical dance skills into fun, memorable, age-appropriate lessons that keep young children engaged and eager to learn.

What should my child wear to class?

For their free trial class, comfortable play clothes or any dancewear you already own is fine! Once officially enrolled, girls wear our required Periwinkle Blue Dance Dress, Ballet Pink tights, and Ballet Pink ballet shoes with hair in a bun. Boys wear a white or level-matching fitted shirt, black pants or tights, black socks, and black ballet shoes.

How is Pre-Ballet different from Creative Movement (Ages 3–4)?

While Creative Movement focuses on basic rhythm, play, and motor skills, Pre-Ballet introduces formal ballet technique, proper terminology, and structured barre and center work. It is designed for 5 and 6-year-olds who are ready for a bit more direction while keeping the atmosphere joyful and low-pressure.

Will my child perform in the end-of-year showcase?

Yes! Our Pre-Ballet students participate in our annual Spring Showcase at the end of May. It is an inspiring experience where dancers show their family and friends everything they have learned. Costume fees ($75 per class for K5) are due by December 10th.

Can my child join mid-year or after another sport season ends?

Absolutely. It happens all the time! Many of our students start the school year in sports like soccer, softball, or cheer, and then join us in the second semester or once their sport season wraps up. We welcome new students throughout the year and help them get caught right up.

How long are the classes?

Pre-Ballet classes run for 45 minutes once per week. This timeframe is ideal for 5 and 6-year-olds, maintaining high energy and focus from start to finish.
