What Your 1st Grader Will Experience

In Level 1, 6 and 7-year-olds transition into structured dance discipline while keeping the learning process inspiring and fun. Our combo class format allows students to experience two foundational dance styles in a single supportive session. Students are welcome to enroll in Tumbling or any other genre independently, ballet training is not required to take other classes.

Ballet 1 & Tap 1 Combo

Classical ballet fundamentals (barre work, center floor, basic positions, arm placement) paired with introductory tap technique (sounds, rhythm, and clear combinations).

Students divide their class time between classical ballet and tap. In ballet, dancers learn proper posture, foot positions, and graceful movement across the floor. In tap, they develop musical rhythm, coordination, and footwork speed using clear, fun sound combinations.

Tumbling 1 (Optional Add-On)

Basic floor gymnastics, core strength, flexibility, and spatial awareness.

Designed for young athletes looking to build floor control, flexibility, and physical power. Dancers practice foundational skills such as forward rolls, cartwheels, bridge work, and balance exercises on mats under safe, guided supervision.

Helpful Details for New Families

Clear answers to common questions about our Youth Dance: Level 1 (Ages 6–7 | 1st Grade) program.

Does my child need to have completed Pre-Ballet to join Level 1?

Not at all. While Level 1 builds on the basics learned in Pre-Ballet, it is structured to accommodate brand-new 1st graders as well as returning students. Our instructors break down all foundational steps clearly so every child feels confident and supported.

What is the Ballet/Tap combo format?

The combo format combines two distinct dance genres into a single weekly class time. Dancers spend the first portion of class focused on classical ballet technique and barre work, then change into tap shoes for the second portion to focus on rhythm, timing, and footwork.

What should my child wear to class?

For their free trial class, comfortable clothing or any dancewear you already own is perfectly fine. Once officially registered, girls wear a Lavender leotard or dance dress, Ballet Pink tights, Ballet Pink ballet shoes, and Caramel tap shoes (hair in a bun). Boys wear a fitted white shirt, fitted black pants or tights, black socks, black ballet shoes, and black tap shoes.

How is Level 1 different from Pre-Ballet (Ages 5–6)?

Level 1 marks the transition into formal technique training. Students begin working at the ballet barre, learning proper French vocabulary, and developing tap footwork speed. While Pre-Ballet focuses on movement play and early concepts, Level 1 introduces structured progression while maintaining a supportive, non-competitive culture.

Can my child start mid-year with no prior experience?

Yes, absolutely. It happens all the time! Many of our students start the school year in sports like soccer or cheer and then transition into our dance classes in the second semester or once their sport season wraps up. We welcome new students throughout the year and help them get caught right up.

Will my child perform in the end-of-year showcase?

Yes! All Level 1 dancers participate in our annual Spring Showcase at the end of May. It is an exciting, inspiring finale to the dance season where students perform on stage for family and friends. Costume details ($75 per class for 3rd grade and younger) are finalized by December 10th.

How many classes per week should my 6 or 7-year-old take?

Most 1st graders start with our single weekly Ballet 1 / Tap 1 combo class. If your child has high energy and wants to build athletic strength, adding a Tumbling 1 class is a popular, fun pairing!
