What Your 4th Grader Will Experience

In Level 4, 9 and 10-year-olds refine their alignment and musical accuracy while taking on more complex movement combinations. Dancers focus on developing technical precision across individual discipline options or build a well-rounded schedule by combining multiple styles. Students are welcome to enroll in any genre independently, ballet training is not required to take other classes.

Ballet 3/4 & Tap 3/4

Classical ballet technique paired with rhythmic tap technique.

Fourth graders take ballet in the studio's combined Ballet 3/4 class, working through formal barre and center work with a focus on turnouts, foot extension, and pirouette preparation. In tap, students increase their footwork speed, mastering syncopated rhythms, time steps, and clear, articulate sound quality.

Jazz & Contemporary (Elective)

Upbeat performance energy, core stability, and expressive floorwork.

Designed for dancers wanting to explore style and musicality. Jazz 2/3 and Jazz 4 introduce sharp turns, leaps, and high-energy combinations, while Contemporary 1/2 focuses on fluid movement, emotional expression, floor transitions, and core alignment.

Tumbling 3 (Optional Add-On)

Floor gymnastics, athletic strength, flexibility, and spatial control.

Designed for young athletes looking to build physical power and acrobatic control. Dancers practice advanced floor skills such as walkovers, handstand holds, aerial preparation, and core balance exercises on mats under safe, guided supervision.

Hip Hop (Elective)

High-energy rhythm, groove, and performance confidence.

Designed for dancers who love to move to the beat, Hip Hop builds musicality, sharp footwork, and body control through grooves, isolations, and fun, upbeat choreography. It's a great first class for students new to the studio and an energetic complement to ballet, jazz, or tap for dancers building a well-rounded schedule.

What parents ask us most

Helpful Details for New Families

Clear answers to common questions about our Youth Dance: Level 4 program.

Does my child need prior dance experience to join Level 4?

Not at all. While Level 4 expands on foundational technique, our curriculum is structured to support both experienced dancers and brand-new 4th graders. Our instructors break down technical steps clearly so every student feels capable and encouraged.

What is the Fundamentals placement track for older beginners?

If your 9 or 10-year-old is starting dance for the very first time, our Fundamentals track offers age-appropriate instruction alongside peers. It allows older beginners to build core technique rapidly.

What should my child wear to their first class?

For their free trial class, comfortable athletic clothing or any dancewear you already own is completely fine. Once officially registered, students follow the designated Level 4 uniform color code (Navy leotard for girls in Ballet 3/4).

Can my child start mid-year with no prior experience?

Yes, absolutely. We warmly welcome new students throughout the school year. Many dancers join us after seasonal sports wrap up, and our teaching team ensures they receive the personal guidance needed to catch right up with their peers.

Will my child perform in the end-of-year showcase?

Yes! All Level 4 dancers participate in our annual Spring Showcase at the end of May. It is an exciting milestone where dancers perform custom choreography in costume on a professional stage for family and friends. Costume deposits are finalized by December 10th.

How many classes per week should my 9 or 10-year-old take?

Most 4th graders take 1 to 2 classes per week (such as Ballet and Tap paired with Jazz, Contemporary, or Tumbling). Dancers who want to progress rapidly across multiple styles often choose 3 hours per week.
