Inside the Level 2 Experience

At ages 7 and 8, dancers begin developing stronger muscle memory, focus, and rhythmic expression. Level 2 builds directly on Level 1 foundations while opening up exciting opportunities to explore jazz dance and tumbling skills. Students are welcome to enroll in Jazz, Tumbling, or any other genre independently, ballet training is not required to take other classes (ballet enrollment is required only for Pre-Pointe and Pointe classes).

Ballet 2 & Tap 2 Combo

Progression of classical ballet technique (longer barre combinations, center work, across-the-floor movement) paired with advancing tap skills (complex rhythms, time steps, and musicality).

Dancers divide their time between structured ballet and tap instruction. In ballet, students strengthen their posture, footwork precision, and turnout. In tap, they master clearer sound clarity, syncopated rhythms, and energetic footwork combinations.

Jazz 1 (Elective Style)

First introduction to jazz technique, body isolations, syncopation, turns, and dynamic, upbeat movement.

Available starting in 2nd grade, Jazz 1 introduces dancers to energetic, expressive movement. Students learn sharp isolations, rhythmic jumps, basic turns, and fun combinations that build physical strength and performance charisma.

Tumbling 1 or 2 (Optional Add-On)

Basic floor gymnastics, core strength, flexibility, and spatial awareness.

Designed for young athletes looking to build floor control, flexibility, and physical power. Dancers practice foundational skills such as forward rolls, cartwheels, bridge work, and balance exercises on mats under safe, guided supervision.

What You Might Want to Know

Clear answers to common questions about our Youth Dance: Level 2 (Ages 7–8 | 2nd Grade) program.

Does my child need to have completed Level 1 to join Level 2?

Not necessarily. While Level 2 builds on skills taught in Level 1, we welcome new 2nd graders who are starting dance for the first time. Our experienced instructors ensure every student receives the individual guidance needed to feel capable and confident.

What is the Ballet/Tap combo format at this level?

Our combo class allows 2nd graders to train in two fundamental dance genres in one weekly session. Dancers dedicate the first portion of class to classical ballet technique at the barre and floor, then change into tap shoes to work on rhythmic timing and sound precision.

What is Jazz 1 and is it required?

Jazz 1 is an optional elective class offered starting in 2nd grade! It focuses on fun, high-energy movement, body isolations, and jumps. It is not required, but it is a fantastic, popular add-on for dancers who want to expand their skills.

Can my child start at Level 2 with no prior experience?

Yes! We frequently welcome brand-new 7 and 8-year-old dancers. Up through 3rd grade, students with no previous dance background integrate smoothly into their age-matched level.

What should my child wear to class?

For a free trial class, comfortable play clothing or any dancewear you already own is fine! Once officially enrolled, girls wear a Lemon leotard or dance dress with Ballet Pink tights, Ballet Pink ballet shoes, and Caramel tap shoes for combo class (and Caramel jazz shoes for Jazz 1). Boys wear a white or level-matching fitted shirt, fitted black pants or tights, black socks, and black dance shoes.

How many classes per week can my child take?

Most Level 2 dancers take the core Ballet 2 / Tap 2 combo class once per week. Dancers eager for more can add Jazz 1 or Tumbling to create a well-rounded two or three-class weekly routine.

Will my child perform in the end-of-year showcase?

Yes! All Level 2 students participate in our annual Spring Showcase at the end of May. It is an inspiring performance families look forward to all season. Costume fees ($75 per class for students 3rd grade and younger) are due by December 10th.
